The company wants to replace Surface Pro cords (with the exception of the recent Surface Pro 4) sold before March 2015 in the United States. Channelnomics Europe claims that in Europe the recall will apply to devices sold before July 2015. Free cord replacements should be available starting around Jan. 22, and you’ll want to dispose of, or recycle, existing cords, depending on local regulations.
More details about how the exchange will work will be forthcoming. Microsoft said they should be available soon on a Web page dedicated to the issue. In the meantime, it’s probably a good idea to abstain from using an affected Surface Pro, at least not while it’s plugged in.
